With school starting one week from today, I really need to iron out a few things. This year will be unlike any other--EVER--not only because I have a baby, but because school will start earlier. So, I have written down my game plan and we'll see how it works. I did a trial run the other day and I was a basket case trying to remember if I had everything in the truck that both Tanner and I would need throughout the day. Also, Tanner wouldn't cooperate and kept crying because he wasn't being held while I got ready.
Looking at my itinerary, the 12:05 pm pump time will depend on students getting out of my room quickly and going on to lunch, since my lunch is only 25 minutes as it is! I have a closet in my classroom with no windows and a lock on the outside, plus a fridge in my room to store the milk. I had planned on taking fresh milk over to the daycare during my conference hour, but it seems that will be unlikely. Washing dishes will be an issue due to my time constraints. I may not have much of a conference hour this year due to it being taken up with pumping milk and washing the pump parts for the next go 'round. (Hope I don't have any parents actually needing me on my conference-haha-what will I tell them?) Plus the hot water in my classroom is full of sulfur and stinks up the whole room, so I will have to wash the pump parts in cold water and then microsteam them. No time to run to the home-ec room to wash parts. Tobin will help me some in the mornings because it will be hectic getting us both ready and out the door by 6:30am. I was barely out of the shower by that time last year and hard a hard enough time getting there by 7:45. I'm just not a morning person. Tobin and I will both need to be in bed by 8pm if only Tanner will cooperate!
- up at 4:45am and try to shower unless Tanner needs food
- pump from 5:15 to 5:35
- leave house by 6:30
- drop Tanner off at daycare at 7am
- be at school by 7:10 (virtually impossible--10 minutes!)
- pump from 8:45-9:05 in the classroom closet
- eat lunch and pump in the closet from 12:05-12:25
- school is out at 2:30, so I'll pick Tanner up at daycare and pump again at home around 3:30 OR pump again at school and pick up tanner by 4:15 or so. 4:30 at the latest!
I could possibly have to wash dishes and pump at school 3x!! YUCK! Guess I need to buy a dish washing bin and keep some Dawn liquid at school and use the lab sink in my classroom?! haha Lunch will be boring and I won't get to eat with the other teachers. This will be a real challenge to keep Tanner on breast milk for at least the first 6 months of his life. Of course the stock in the freezer will carry him through a few more months after that. The black tray seen in the pic is full of 6oz servings. Actually, we have breast milk stored in 4 different freezers. Three here at the house and some frozen milk at my mother's. Just in case any freezer dies or anyone loses power. The goal is to keep Tanner on breast milk through Christmas break. Wish me luck!
that fact that you did a trial run the other day made me laugh out loud. good idea!!! i will have poms practice at 6 some mornings, so i have thought about starting to shower at night. so hard for me to full wake up without a shower though.
ReplyDeletestarting early is definitely going to take some getting used to, but when the bell rings at 2:20, i will be thrilled!!
I am also a teacher and on my baby two. With baby #1 I didn't have the stock pile before school started so you are ahead of the game in that area. That will be a life saver for you. (I am better stocked this baby as well.)
ReplyDeleteI also switched to a night shower... it just made the mornings a lot easier. Atleast you will always be clean for school, if there are major problems in the morning you may miss a shower.
Don't worry is the biggest thing. It is easy to stress about having time to pump, and our jobs are definitely not filled with down time. If you stress you will just put your body through the ringer and your milk just may dry up. I found when I worried about things I had a smaller milk supply, but when I knew everything would work out okay my milk was okay.
You are doing great and you are determined enough to make sure your baby gets what he needs so it will happen.
Good luck in school. I don't envy your early start, but you will love that early end of the day.
oh my gosh hol! you can do it though. i don't know, but i got a mental picture of you sitting in a closet pumping away like crazy and it made me giggle!
ReplyDeleteugh... sounds like a stressball to me. but, determination and staying calm will be crucial. love you!
ReplyDeleteHolly, you must be an extremely organized person to have done a trial run:) That sounds hectic! You can do it though. What time did you guys start last year? I am so excited because my new school doesn't start until
ReplyDelete8:30. This will be the latest I have ever gotten to sleep in the mornings, even with a thirty minute drive!
Girl you are a pumping machine!! Wow you are so lucky to have a great milk supply. I usually pump about once a day just to have some on hand for my hubby to feed Preston, but wow, I looked at your picture with all the frozen milk and then you said you had some in three different fridges and I about died!! LOL
ReplyDeleteI can totally see your little game plan all written out and you completing your little trial run! You are so funny!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteIt will be a lot to get used to, but you can do it. It's amazing what you can get done when you HAVE to!
It is so funny to see what people comment on. I guess it seems normal to me to do a trial run, but it has tickled me to see that maybe it is NOT so normal! LOL!!!
ReplyDeleteI am very Type A, so Kodi, yo uhit the nail on the head. I did have it written out, with times, on a sheet of paper!!! Jenni, I pump about every 3-4 hours, so it just adds up! My boobs would be killing me if I only pumped once per day, but I guess it is just what you get your body used to. I wanted to slow down on it, but they said you can't go back once you slow down, so I will see how long I can hang! Thanks everyone for all of your support!
Anonymous~I wish I knew who you were! Thank you for your candid advice and well wishes!
Cin- Quite an image, huh? Actually, today I just stayed at my desk and pumped, with the door locked of course, and propped the funnels on the desk drawer. Then I had both hands free to sift through my science magazine and order supplies! How's that for an alarming image??????? LOL!!!
Holly,
ReplyDeleteYOU GO GIRL! Wow....is all I can say.
Miss ya. I feel so disconnected when I do not get on the blogs regularly. Sorry for the delay.
Hang in there...you are in my prayers.
Love,
Robin
