Gestational diabetes?

The nurse called and stated that my Glucola tests were abnormal and I would need to go to the hospital for a four-hour blood workup. From what I gather, I show up at 7:30 a.m. and drink the horrible sugar drink. Then, I have three blood draws, one every hour. I am free to go in between. I was kind of afraid of this because I have craved sweets, candies, and fruits this whole pregnancy. I have little to no will power, so I have already gained 19 lbs and I am at 25 weeks. Not a good track for weight gain...plus, I have no time for exercise and a walk of any length hurts my feet and lower back. UGH...I sure don't want to change my diet to protein and low carbs, but I don't want a ten pounder coming out of me either!

Tobin and Tanner spent some quality time tonight while making our dinner. They grilled a flat iron steak, mushrooms, and red peppers. Tanner could ride around in the backpacker all evening and never whine. Tobin naturally assumed that Tanner would want to go around shirtless since he does....crack me up!

Tobin has the weekend off, so I have planned family pics tomorrow. No clue what to wear, but I'd like some pics of all three of us during this pregnancy. Maybe she can get some cute shots of Tanner and my belly before it gets any bigger

Plans are moving along for Tanner's birthday party. I haven't seen the design for his Baby Einstein b-day cake because the cake lady is knee-deep in graduation cakes right now. I have seen her work, so I trust it, but I sure am curious! I'm also trying to figure out what to put in the treat bags!

  1. Those pics are so funny! Tanner may look just like you, but he is going to take after Tobin in action! I have yet to find a mother who disagrees with the old wives tale of craving sweet stuff (fruit or desserts) for a girl, and salt for a boy. I was a McDonald's french fry hound with Koen and try to be better with Griffin.

Who is making the cake? What will the top look like? Is she making a little tiny one for him to dive into for pics, and a large one for adults? Hmmm...treat bags. Are they for the kids only?

  2. Yikes - good luck with the glucose test results. Hopefully you won't have to worryabout GD. And that is so funny about Tanner being shirtless with your hubby. Thatis true though, I think I rarely see a picture on your blog where he is actually wearing a shirt! LOL Hahaha.

  3. Treat bags??? for what?

You gotta cut everything out but fruit and veggies, and of course, protein!!! Sorry, just a few more months...
I never ate any sweets with you guys and maintained...you can too.

  4. Yes, I know, Mom, and you stayed a size 8 the whole time and even lost weight while pregnant with me, but you were almost 15 years younger than I am at the same stage. That matters. You must have had more will power than me as well.
I'll have you know that I ate JELLO for my evening sweet and it stunk! I also think it was the apple that made me fail the blood work...dang fructose!

  5. Hmmm...if it is GD, maybe that explains why your belly feels so much bigger at this stage than it did with Tanner. I know several women who have had GD and their bellies just always looked a month or 2 ahead. Hopefully it isn't and you won't have to worry about all that! Good luck with the next round of testing.

  6. I had the 4 hour gestational diabetes test done. It sure makes your arms sore where they prick you! And, Addelin was wired after all that sugar!

  7. Holly.. I didn't find out until late into my pregnancy that I had GD. It was almost too late to do anything about it, but I met with a diabetic counseler that gave me an insulin meter and was able to control my blood sugars easily with diet. I also didn't feel as though I had much energy at 30 something weeks to start exercising much more than walking. I can say that I was soooo scared that my baby would have trouble, but she's been glorious and had no trouble to date with anything that had to do with my condition. I can say that after she was born I found that my eyesight diminished. I used to have 20/20 vision and no glasses. My vision is now 20/30 and I need glasses for reading. It was all worth it, so don't worry. You can control things with your GD. Don't let it get you down! Let me know if you have any questions on anything.
