Well, this has been a fairly sleepless week. I have simply GOT to get Tanner on a schedule where he understands that we sleep at NIGHT and not all day long! I understand that babies sleep a lot, but he really is the most active at night, WIDE AWAKE from 10-midnight and 2-4am! It has come to my realization that I go back to work in three weeks and this simply will NOT work. I cannot deal with over 150 middle school kids on 3 hours of sleep! I won't enjoy it and they sure as heck won't enjoy me! haha This year is going to be a real challenge for other reasons too. Instead of arriving at school around 7:45 am, I am going to have to get both of us ready and drop him off by 7am!!! I will have to be at my door by 7:15 for supervision and hall duty because school will begin at 7:35 this year. They are changing our bus schedules for a variety of reasons, but I think my building starts the earliest! It will be a really be a challenge to make sure that I have all of Tanner's daycare things, and my school stuff, and get ready and out the door by 7am! There is quite the checklist of things to take when I leave the house with Tanner! I am always afraid that I have left something vitally important in the house. Also, I am not a morning person and not especially known for my punctuality.
Last night was kind of a date night for Tobin and me! Tanner spent 5 hours at Grammie and Gumpa's house and Tobin and I went shopping and to Hemingway's for an all-you-can-eat crab leg food bar! I was quite surprised at how tired I got just walking around the mall. I just don't have the stamina that I used to. Could be my lack of sleep combined with my now out-of-shape body! We did have to cut the night short so I could get back home before my boobs exploded. By the way, for those of you "in the know," I am now making purple milk again. Vicious cycle, but Tanner has no symptoms. I'll leave it at that.
Tanner has had a few "firsts" here lately:
- He has easily been able to turn his head from left to right, and not get it stuck facing down during tummy-time.
- Since he can now sit in upright positions for extended periods of time, he has been getting used to the swing, vibrating seat, and the car seat.
- He is now big enough to wear bibs while he drinks his milk and has built up to about 110 mL, which is almost 4 oz per feeding! My favorite lactation consultant weighed him this week and he was 9 lbs 14 oz, so that is HUGE!!! He does feel very heavy to me these days since he has more than doubled his NICU weight! He literally has creases in his arms and legs because he now has some fat rolls!
- He is making eye contact and following the movements of people/things and seeming more interested in the world around him. He has enjoyed the carrier, as seen in the pics, a few times with both mommy and daddy. Sidenote: Daddy will have to learn to put a shirt on or keep complaining that lil' Tanner pulls his chest hair out. :( lol
- He is sleeping from anywhere to 1.5 hours - 4 hours at a time. The 4-hour time periods are almost always during the day though. I finally learned to heat up my rice/corn bag in the microwave and move it around in his bassinet to warm up his blankets. The transfer from my arms to his bed goes much more smoothly - most of the time.
- He has to have his hair washed everyday because he has oily hair, but the nurse said that is way better than a dry head and cradle cap.
He makes some funny faces, like the one in his vibrating seat above. He's getting some poochy cheeks!!! Well, he is finally asleep here next to me, so I had better get some things done. Hope everyone has had an enjoyable weekend!
Love the update!!! I can't believe he's 8 weeks old. He now weighs what Adilynn weighed when she was born...it's a nice weight because you don't feel like they will break!!! :) He is just so adorable! I hope he starts sleeping for you. That would not be a fun schedule when you go back to work! What have your dogs thought of him?
ReplyDeleteStarting the school day early is definitely going to take some getting used to. Don't we start at the same time as you? I thought we were 7:30-2:30. I never did hear for sure though. It will be nice getting done early, but getting there is going to be hard. I'll be having poms practice at 6:00 in morning! YUCK!
Okay, this comment is long enough....:)
Trai and I were so very fortunate with the sleep issue. By about week 2 or 3, Em was sleeping until 5 or 6 a.m. I was always so thankful b/c I'm the type that has to have my sleep. Tanner will get it figure out before too long. And actually, being at daycare will get him into more of a routine...it might help you both.
ReplyDeleteSo, if we start at 7:35, what is our official end time? It will be tough to start your morning routine with Tanner, but you'll get the hang of it. I promise!
I'm loving all the photos you are sending and posting. Have you had the feeling that you are taking way too many pics yet? Or maybe you are being more conservative. I crack up at the 5000 newborn pics I have of Em sleeping.
Such a cute picture Holly. How sweet...before long he will be smiling so much at you and Tobin.
ReplyDeleteMaddy is doing great too. She wakes up at around 2am a lot but will go back to sleep after her feeding. Sydney started sleeping through the night at 8-9 weeks and Maddy will be 8 weeks this Thursday. I can hardly believe it! Time sure does fly.
Talk to you soon. Tanner is a doll!
WHAT!!!!???? Tanner is now almost 10 pounds? Good grief.... Great pics!
ReplyDeleteOk so I have two comments. First - I can't believe you are going back to work in 3 weeks!! And you describing everything you have to get done by 7am....I don't think I would be able to do it. Yesterday we were barely able to make it to church by 11am. LOL Are you able to take any more time off? Oh wait, nope you're a teacher duh. Oh wow - part time maybe?
ReplyDeleteOkay and the other thing I wanted to ask - as I was reading all of Tanner's "firsts", so, do you calculate his age by when he was born or by his real duedate? I was reading all of these and wondering if he has been doing these things in the timeframe that a baby would for how long he's been on the 'outside', or is he doing these things for the timeframe if he had been born on his real duedate? I was just super curious about that.
Wow! hes really gotten big, No telling how much he would have wieghed if he was born on time! Im sure the school schedule will work, I'm dreading it to, but at least you'll have more time in the afternoon with him. I'm guessing your not doing the scrapbooking club? you should and bring Tanner! That would be fun. I will come see him before school starts, so that will be soon I guess!:) I'm acually kind of excited! Well ttyl
ReplyDeleteAbby
I can't imagine getting all that done and getting myself together at that time of morning! Morning is not my time to shine either. I am actually rather excited because my new school won't start until 8:45 this year! That will be such a nice change for me:) I won't be done as early, but like I said, since morning isn't my time, I'm fine with it!
ReplyDeleteI am so glad Tanner is doing so well. From everything I have heard from other people, Kodi is right, daycare will probably help you both get into a better routine! Good luck!
Heather~ Thanks! I do feel more secure with him this size, but also miss the tiny size! The pets are all used to him and even his crying now. The often come up and smell him though.
ReplyDeleteRick is pushing for the 7:35 start time as that gives the kids 20 minutes between the first bell and the bell to be in class. No word yet on whether he got his way or not.
Kodi~ No official word on times yet at all...I will be vivisting Rick at school one of these afternoons and will ask if he knows anything yet. You sure were lucky on her sleeping so well so early! I have been fairly good about not taking too many oics, or at least I have deleted the ones that weren't truly scrapbookable or frameable.
