New OB nurse appt~

Tobin attended the appointment with me and we were there for about an hour including the blood draw. They did not let him go with me when they took my blood. Liability reasons, I presume. We then confirmed some medical history info, signed papers, and talked insurance. We were signed up for a gift basket and received a bag of Simulac and Enfamil stuff with several give-aways inside. I was able to ask some of my quirky questions about aspartame, water quality with tap vs. bottled, and regular milk vs. organic. Our new OB nurse was maybe 23 and had never had a child, so she just knew technical info. I can relate to that, so I wasn't irritated with her, but left my questions for the doctor nevertheless.
Results:
The dr. recommended aspartame products are OK, but at a minimum and had no preference with what kind of water or milk I drink, just drink lots of it. I DO have an opinion though.
I plan to ONLY drink organic milk because the hormone levels in regular milk are alarming, to say the least. Check out http://www.preventcancer.com/consumers/general/milk.htm
I think it says a lot when American milk is BANNED in Europe due to hormone levels. Yet, farmer's need more production! UGH! Have you thought about why young American girls are maturing and developing at such a young age in this country in the last 10-15 years?????

OH, the doctor was one day later on his predictions for my own prediction of the due date. His estimate is July 11th.

  2. I know Emily! SCARY indeed! There are a lot of genetically modified foods in this country and they don't have to label ANY of it! The FDA equivalent in Europe requires labels on any food that has recombinant DNA over there, but not in the States. We have all eaten it and never knew the difference. Most of the time it either tastes better, looks better, claims to be more nutritional, or helps the grower in some way. The problem is that we don't know THE LONG TERM EFFECTS and it is NOT NATURAL.

  3. Well, I have tried to talk Mitch into letting me buy all organic stuff...I just haven't sold him on it yet. I guess because it is so much more expensive?? Where do you buy everything? I know Price Cutter has a huge selection.

  4. Honestly, I just get it wherever it is convenient and a price I am willing to pay. I don't buy everything organic, by any means, but try to get produce and dairy that is organic. Both major grocery chains have options either in the produce section or the aisles. I don't buy meat anymore at Wal-Mart for sure! Harter House for meats. Mama Jeans is also GREAT!

  5. When I was a kid, we drank out of the garden hose, played with lawn darts, and enjoyed milk from juiced up cows back in the 70's. How did we all make it w/o growing a third eye? I still drink over a gallon of skim milk a week. Lighten up a bit, if you will. There are bigger issues.
    PS. Don't hit me.

  7. Yes, and we all slept in lead-based painted cribs, but this is a different world today. 1st of all, Monsanto hadn't developed the growth hormone at that point so the fresh cow milk was healthier(1994). Secondly, there are way more diseases, disorders, and labels now due to environmental toxins that I'd like to avoid. Vegetables grown in the ground were much more nutritious 30 years ago too. Education = wisdom, yet scientific advances can be a blessing and a curse.

  8. Follow the money. We have fewer diseases, not more. We have more disorders b/c there is a market for them. We have more new lables to prevent lawsuits. Again, follow the money...

  9. I'm with Holly all the way on this one. As a parent (and parent-to-be), one has to make whatever choices they feel are the absolute best they can possibly make given their knowledge. People have complete control over what they put into their bodies, and that is a powerful thing. Buying organic is not only good for the body, it's good for the environment. Especially if you can buy local organic products. I realize that not everyone feels that way, or has the same passion for the environment that we do. But, you can't knock a science teacher for practicing what she preaches! Besides, she's my sister and I have to defend her, which is easy this time b/c I agree with her! ;)
